Shark Power Detect Stick Vacuum
I get asked all the time what vacuum I recommend, and this is right at the top of the list. I’ll be honest, I used to be an upright vacuum guy who didn’t care for stick vacuums, because I thought they lacked power. This one changed my mind, because it packs a ton of suction and comes with a variety of attachments so you can clean just about anywhere.

A few features really stand out. The flexible joints on the stick let you get under furniture and beds where you’d normally have to drop to your hands and knees, so no dust bunny escapes. It’s lightweight, which is a big help on stairs where a heavy vacuum wears out your arm, and the bright lights on the head show you the dust on the floor so you never miss a spot. My favorite part, which I didn’t think I needed until I had it, is the auto-emptying dock. It charges the vacuum so it’s always ready, and it empties the canister into a larger one that holds around 45 days of debris, so dust stays contained instead of flying around your house.

A Pressure Washer
If you own a home, a pressure washer is a tool worth investing in, because you can use it all around the outside of your house to clean spaces nothing else can touch. There are two machines I own and recommend, though you only need one. I’m just the guy who runs a cleaning channel.

The first is from Simpson, and it’s a beast at around 3,500 PSI and 2.5 GPM, meaning high pressure and a lot of water flow for fast, easy cleaning. If you go this route, invest in a surface cleaner attachment too, because using the bare wand on a driveway is slow and can leave uneven “tiger stripes” once it dries, which a surface cleaner prevents. The second option is an electric model from GreenWorks at around 1,800 PSI and 1.2 GPM. It’s nice because there’s no gas or engine to maintain, though you do need an outlet nearby, and with less power things take a bit longer. For a smaller space it’s plenty, but for a larger home with lots of siding and concrete, I’d go with the gas machine. If you want the full walkthrough, I cover it in my guide on how to pressure wash your driveway.
Zep Oven and Grill Cleaner
This is, by far, my favorite oven cleaner I’ve ever used, which sounds silly until you’ve cleaned as many ovens as I have. As a professional cleaner, I’ve tackled thousands of them, especially in commercial spaces and apartments, and the hardest part is always the baked-on grease and grime that’s been cooking in there for years. You need a cleaner that lifts and breaks all that down so you can wipe it away, and this one does it better and faster than the others I’ve tried.

I love it on the barbecue grill outside too, since those get just as greasy, and it cuts right through the buildup. One important note: this is strong stuff, so always wear gloves, open some windows for good airflow, and test a small inconspicuous area first to make sure it won’t damage the surface. The next time you hit some truly nasty grease, give it a try.

A Cobweb Duster
At $8.99, this is one of those tools you see and think, “What in the world is that?” It’s a cobweb duster, and you put it on an extension pole to clear cobwebs and dust from the areas you can’t reach. The dome shape is clever, because it gets into nooks and crannies, and when you find sticky cobwebs that are hard to remove, you just put it up to them and give it a quick spin to wrap them right up into the brush head. I use it in the garage, inside the house, and even on the exterior for spots I can’t reach by hand on an extension pole. For under nine dollars, it’s one of the handiest tools you can keep around.
Levoit Air Purifier
I’ve had my Levoit air purifier for five years and it’s still working great. I keep this one in my bedroom and run two larger units for the main floor and basement, and they do a great job cutting down the dust in my home, helping with lingering odors, and keeping everything cleaner longer.
Two things to keep in mind when you buy one. First, get the right size for your space, because a unit that’s too small for a large open room just can’t keep up, and you’ll be paying to run something that isn’t doing much. Second, keep the filters clean by vacuuming them and replacing them on schedule, since a clogged filter can’t clean the air no matter how long you run it. If you’re on the fence, grab a small one and give it a try. I think you’ll be won over.
DeWalt Shop-Vac
Having a Shop-Vac around the house is incredibly useful. It can suck up water, which is a game changer when you have a spill and need to prevent damage fast, and it has more power than a normal household vacuum for bigger projects. I love using mine on my refrigerator coils, where the extra suction pulls out as much dust as possible.
The reason I recommend this specific one is its stealth technology, which sounds funny to say about a Shop-Vac, but it runs about 50% quieter than most. That’s a huge deal. I’ve used Shop-Vacs my whole life and they are loud, to the point where I wear hearing protection. This one is quiet enough to hold a conversation next to, and please do protect your hearing around loud machinery, because once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. It’s powerful, comes with plenty of attachments, and it’s an easy recommendation.
Shark Stain Striker
I talk about this one a lot, especially for anyone with pets. There is nothing worse than your pet having an accident on the carpet in the middle of the night, and this makes cleaning it up faster and easier so you can get back to bed. I’m speaking from experience there. It does a great job pulling the mess out of the carpet rather than just spreading it around. It’s not just for accidents, either. You can use it on upholstery, furniture, and stairs, and it does a really good job across all of them. If you’ve got pets, consider this a must-have, and it pairs perfectly with the methods in my guide on cleaning pet pee spots out of carpet.
